How to Calculate Wallpaper Rolls for Your Room

Wallpaper adds texture, pattern, and personality that paint alone cannot achieve. But calculating the right number of rolls can be surprisingly tricky, especially with patterned wallpaper that requires careful matching. Our wallpaper calculator accounts for room dimensions, door and window openings, roll size, and pattern repeat to give you an accurate roll count with a built-in waste allowance.

The biggest variable in wallpaper estimation is the pattern repeat. A wallpaper with no pattern repeat (solid or random texture) wastes very little material. But a large pattern repeat—say 24 inches—means each strip must be aligned precisely, and you may lose up to 24 inches per strip in matching waste. This can increase your total roll count by 20–30% compared to a non-repeating design. Always check the pattern repeat measurement on the wallpaper specification sheet before ordering.

Roll sizes also vary by region. US standard rolls are typically 27 inches wide by 27 feet long (roughly 60 square feet of coverage). European rolls are 21 inches wide by 33 feet long (about 57 square feet). Some premium and commercial wallpapers come in double rolls. Always verify the exact dimensions of your chosen wallpaper before using any calculator.

Wallpaper is a commitment, so seeing it in context matters. Upload your room photo to RoomLab and use AI to preview different wallpaper patterns and textures on your walls before ordering. It is much easier to change a digital preview than to strip and rehang real wallpaper.
