How to Convert Between Architectural Drawing Scales

Architectural drawings represent real-world spaces at reduced sizes, and understanding drawing scales is fundamental to reading and creating accurate plans. Our scale converter lets you input a measurement from any drawing and instantly see the real-world dimension, or convert between two different drawing scales—a common need when combining plans at different scales or printing at a different size.

Metric scales express the ratio directly: 1:50 means 1 unit on the drawing equals 50 units in reality, so 2 centimeters on the plan represents 1 meter in the real world. Common metric architectural scales are 1:50 for detailed room plans, 1:100 for floor plans, 1:200 for building elevations, and 1:500 for site plans. Imperial scales use a different notation: 1/4" = 1'-0" means one quarter inch on the drawing represents one foot in reality, which is equivalent to 1:48.

Rescaling between formats is where mistakes commonly occur. If you have a plan at 1:50 and need to print it at 1:100, every measurement on the new print will be exactly half the size of the original. Our calculator handles this conversion automatically, showing both the real-world dimension and the measurement on the new drawing.
